How to get a set of rippling chest muscles is one of the most common requests down at the gym. It is understandable why - a great looking set of pecs look sexy and masculine when you take your top off at the beach or pool. They also provide a great shape to the body whether you are wearing a T shirt or shirt.

The general shape of the muscle is generally defined by the large pectoralis major muscle that lies on the chest. Underneath this muscle, however, there is a smaller muscle, the pectoralis minor which lies directly against the chest wall.

To build up the chest wall muscles we have to focus on exercises that work and stimulate them into growth. Another important aspect though is also to exercise the other big muscle groups in the body. A good example is the quadriceps muscles on the front of the thighs. Working these stimulates the production of growth hormone with promotes muscle growth all over the body.

The bench press is one of the most popular exercises for the chest. It has to be performed correctly and slowly to reap its full benefits. Lying on a bench, on your back, hold a barbell above you at arms length. Then slowly lower the barbell down until it just touches the chest at which point start to push it back up until your arms are straight again. Do this slowly, with no jerky movements or arched back.

In order to see those beautifully sculpted chest muscles we need to get rid of that layer of fat that lies over the chest. This achieved by dieting to reduce the calorie intake and aerobic exercise to burn excess calories. It can be difficult because if you go overboard you will send your body into a catabolic state which will lead to the net result of breaking down that precious, hard earned muscle.

To get this definition you need to maintain a good level of protein intake but also to start adding some cardio routines into your workout schedule. What tends to happen, if you don’t do this, is that you will gain muscle as well as fat. This will increase your overall size but you will be poorly defined and look bloated.

How long it takes to achieve your goal, like anything else, will depend on how much work you are willing to put in. Consistency is the key - keeping up with the workout program, and controlling your diet. It is better to make small gains more regularly. that way you will stay more motivated and your gains will be longer lasting. It is possible to achieve your look in as little as eleven weeks.

When you take off your shirt, the thing most people notice is a set of ripped abs. This situation can come up anytime, whether it is at the beach, around the pool ore even if you are out mowing the lawn. In these situations, others are going to notice your physique.

If you are a bit flabby and overweight then you may find less sensitive people chuckle at you or make comments about you to friends and colleagues. Although this is unpleasant it can be a harsh cruel reality.

If you are thin then often you will escape most peoples notice. If you have a six pack though, a set of washboard abs you could bounce a quarter off, the situation is much different. You will attract the kind of attention that everyone craves. They are considered a sign of vitality and health. Getting a six pack is hard work and you will need a plan to follow. This plan outlines the methods for achieving your goal.

The single most important factor:

You may spend hours down the gym performing every conceivable abdominal exercise, but nobody will notice your abs if your body fat percentage is too high.

You may never have been called fat in your life and think that this is not an issue for you. Believe me, however, that there is a great deal of difference between being slim and having the kind of body fat percentage levels to be able to reveal a six pack.

An eight to ten per cent body fat level is the goal. Anything above this and your abs will not be visible. You may find online tools to help you calculate your body fat percentage, but these are highly inaccurate. The only true way is to buy a set of digital calipers to get an accurate reading. These can be found online and are relatively inexpensive.

Once you start to measure you body fat levels then you are on the road to monitoring and reducing your fat levels.

A subject that is often debated is how to build muscle whilst still losing stomach fat. Some people feel it is not possible to get ripped abs this way because the extra calories needed to build the muscle stops you from losing fat. Some, however feel it is possible but it is not very effective.

There is, however, a way to build muscle and lose fat at the same time. It is achieved by structuring the workouts so that it actually increases the bodies metabolic rate which helps to burn the fat rather than losing fat by calorie deprivation.

What is required is a routine that both exercises and stimulates the growth of the muscles whilst at the same time increasing the bodies metabolic load. This cannot be achieved with the traditional bodybuilding way of isolating and working individual muscle groups. A good example is the bench press which isolates some of the upper body muscle but does not stimulate the big stabilizing muscles of the abdomen and legs.

Instead of this you could perform dumbbell presses on an exercise ball. Although the weight used is light, there is major stabilization occurring within the core muscle groups which give the body a good workout at the same time as doing the one arm press. Although we are focusing on the chest, nearly all the muscles in the body are worked. You may not develop the chest of Hercules but you will certainly increase muscle mass whilst at the same time burning fat.

A further workout for the upper body which will increase metabolic load would be to do press ups with the feet elevated on top of the exercise ball. As previously mentioned, all the big stabilizing muscles are used which will leaving you burning many more calories and losing fat without even making any changes to your diet.

Having a nutritional plan is critical if we are going to increase the bodies metabolic rate through exercise while at the same time stimulating muscle growth. To keep that metabolic rate surging you must eat at least 5-6 times a day. This will not only help your body produce fat burning enzymes but extra protein in the plan will help muscle recovery and ultimately muscle growth.

New science has shown that it is not necessary to consume large quantities of protein to build muscle, it is the timing which is more critical. The key is to take in a fast digesting whey protein prior to working out and then immediately after, allowing you to build muscle whilst at the same time getting ripped abs.
